Scientific benefits of learning cultures through food

  • Enhanced memory and learning: Associating new knowledge (like language or history) with sensory experiences such as taste and smell strengthens retention.
  • Better dietary habits: Exposure to diverse cuisines encourages openness to healthy foods, expanding children’s palates and reducing picky eating.
  • Cultural empathy and awareness: Food acts as a bridge to understanding traditions, values, and identities, fostering inclusivity and reducing stereotypes.
  • Sense of belonging: Sharing meals and food traditions creates community bonds, reducing isolation and promoting well-being.
  • Multisensory engagement: Cooking and tasting involve touch, smell, sight, and taste, which improves comprehension and recall compared to passive learning.

Don’t take it from us. Take it from our community!

My son had a really nice time at the Mexico Plate culture class. He’s still getting used to new environments and can feel a bit overwhelmed sometimes, so he didn’t really join in with the taco-making like the chopping or kneading as much as the other kids.

But I could see he was still very engaged in his own way — mostly observing, paying attention, and taking everything in. What stood out to me was how much he kept talking about it afterwards. Even days later he was still sharing what happened in class, which tells me he genuinely enjoyed it.

Thanks for creating such a welcoming space where kids can participate in their own way and at their own pace. It was a lovely experience for him.
